Bits and Bridles

Lori and I are sending out a challenge to all of our horse enthusiasts so its time to put your thinking caps on!  Now that you're all aiming to be riding superstars it is time to put your horse knowledge to the test. 


This quiz comes in two parts:


1. Start posting the different parts of the bridle and any variations on those parts (for example, the noseband can come in a few different types for different horses).


2. The next step is to name the different types of bits that you have come across in your riding careers.  You can start by naming the bit that you ride your horse in (and if you're not sure, check the next time you're at the barn and don't be afraid to ask your coach).  Be resourceful, you can look on websites or in books but make sure you know what the bit accomplishes as well as its proper name.


Even if your bit has been posted, put it up so that we know you're in and then try to find one that isn't there.


So, there you have it ladies!  I hope to see everyone becoming bit enthusiasts and if this works we'll post a new question in a few weeks.

okies I'll give this a shot...


1.Parts of the Bridle:


Headpiece


Browband


Throatlatch


Cheekpiece


Noseband (drop noseband, flash noseband, crossed noseband, mexican noseband, australia noseband)


Reins (Curb rein, snaffle rein)


Bit


 


2. Different types of bits:


Snaffles:


French link snaffle, Eggbut snaffle, Baucher hanging snaffle, Twisted snaffle, Fulmer snaffle, Cheeck snaffle, Racing snaffle, Loose ring snaffle


Curbs:


Fixed Mouth Curb


Pelhams:


Rugby Pelham, Vulcanite Pelham, Standard Pelham, Kimblewick Pelham


Gags:


Dutch Gag, Jointed Gag


* I think we use the Eggbut Snaffle...what a wierd name for a bit.


 


What the Bit does: Bits are used for communication and control, not for forcing a position of the head and neck

Atta girl Corey!  I'm impressed!


Can you tell me what a rugby pelham accomplishes and what type of horse you would need it on?  In other words, why would you need to use a rugby pelham instead of a snaffle?


Good lesson on Oreo last night.  You found your distances at the jumps really well!

Ok .. um


Rugby pelhams can be used in a double bridle and they are not as mild.

KRISTEN....DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT I AM SAYING....MEGHAN CAN'T DO THE LESSON ON MONDAY...IM SURE SHE WOULD IF SHE COULD....AND IM SURE SHE WILL RESPOND TO YOU ASWELL, BUT I THOUGHT THAT THE 3RD TIME I TOLD YOU WOULD BE ENOUGH!!

yes I do and I was waiting for Meghan to reply also don't be mean as I told you at the barn I get mad easily and just like that I get mad how bout you talk to Sherri  today and see if you can teach our lesson tomorrow instead cuz we are all there to work!!!!!!

Okay then, I was just answering for her as I work with her everyday and Megs doesn't have much time during the day to check the m/b. 


Very good idea about the lesson thing.  I will check with Sherri to see if it would work.  Could you guys be ready to go at 5:00?
